My apologies for not updating this blog as regularly as I would like and thank you for all the feedback I’ve been getting regarding the blog. It’s really appreciated.

Today on Sheperds Bush Road in Hammersmith, two police officers emerged from a police station and joined traffic right in front of me. I attempted to take a picture with my windscreen mounted blackberry before my colleague who was in the car with me reminded me that it’s an offence to take a photograph of a police officer. ”How come I always see girls posing for pictures with coppers” I asked. To which I got no answer. Thanks to wikimedia images I did not have to commit a crime to show you exactly what I mean.

These officers held up traffic for a bout a quater of a mile before there was enough space for us to overtake them. And I thought to myself: This is a very outdated practice. Presumably police used to ride around town in their horses as they went about their daily duties centuries ago. But that was centuries ago when there were no cars. They were policing the population who used horses and horse drawn carriages for commuting.

I would imagine criminals would also try and make off in a horse drawn carriage after they had raided a bank or a jewellery store. And police officers would chase them in horses. Nowadays, they use cars and high powered motorbikes and the police have the same if not superior equipment. For these reasons I would suggest that there’s no reason for horses in the capital city of the United Kingdom. No wonder the roads in this city are constantly gridlocked. I have seen police horses being used effectively for crowd control. Maybe use them there but take them off the roads.

This is just one example of the times having moved on and the laws and practices not keeping up. What other other outdated practices would you like to see being done away with?

I’m going to attempt to write about something I know absolutely nothing about.

It seems like the whole world is being overrun by mobile apps. As a businessman I need to send and receive my e-mails when I’m away from my desk. I can’t drag a laptop with me everywhere I go as I tend to park my car or take a train and it could be a bit bulky. This means I need something called a smart phone and therein lies a minefield of challenges. When I had an opportunity to choose a smart phone I decided to try a few phones before I settled for a blackberry. I couldn’t manage with the i-phone as my fingers are too big which made typing e-mails very difficult. I also decided to consult a friend of mine who had it and he told me the battery never lasts the whole day when he’s out.

When all the work is done and e-mails have been sent and I have a two hour train journey home, I need to read or play some games on my phone or update my twitter. It is therefore very frustrating that I cannot get any apps for my Blackberry. Fore some reason the people who develop apps seem to think that we all have i-phones. I can never get any apps for my phone for when I don’t want to do my e-mails on my phone. Upon closer scrutiny I also realized that my phone does not have an fm radio. That’s probably my fault for not noticing that that feature was not present before I purchased the phone.

I’ve spent three months trying to find blackberry apps for the radio stations I listen to. You’d think the BBC with our licence fee money would have developed one by now. Among my favourite stations, Absolute Radio was the first to develop a Blackberry app so I’ve been using that for a while. For the rest of the London radio stations my search came to an end last week. I came across this app that allows people to listen to their favourite radio stations on their Blackberry: It’s called a Nobex Radio Companion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

It’s 15:30 on a Wednesday afternoon. Usually, I’ll be busy replying to e-mails and returning customers phone calls. Not today.

Instead, I’m sitting in my desk writing this blog, using a pencil and paper. And it feels good. I have not used a pencil and paper since I left school. What with the computers that seem to be running our lives these days. The reason I’m doing this and not what I should be doing is that my internet connection is down and has been for the past two hours. As a result I can’t send e-mails or make phone calls (our phone is VOIP). My VOIP company has been great, they’ve diverted my calls to my mobile. I’ve contacted my ISP (who will remain anonymous for fear of being sued) and they’ve assured me that they’re aware of the problem and are working on it and I should have my connection back in no time. That was two hours ago.

It’s amazing that just over a decade ago Google didn’t even exist but today I practically spend two thirds of my day using it. Before I started writing this piece I printed out a few invoices for tomorrow and suddenly realized that our printer cartridge was almost out. My printer is one of the very old ones and I can only get a replacement cartridge at one specific shop. As I’m going to be on the road for the remainder of the week, I had to act pretty swiftly and order it if I want to have it by the beginning of next week. No Google to search for the shop telephone number so I had to resort to dusting off the yellow pages book. I know people who throw their phonebooks away the moment it arrives.

Ooh, my internet’s back, let me go and update my twitter status.

When I started this fine organization a good four years ago and relied on local newspapers and the yellow pages for advertising. I was then advised that if I was to fully take advantage of modern advertising and woo customers, I needed as much online presence as possible – and that meant having a website and being found by potential customers. I then set about getting quotes from web designers.

I soon realized that I wasn’t going to be able to afford web designer. One day while driving around London listening to my favorite radio presenter James O’ Brien on LBC 97.3 and an advert for Mr Site, a site building product, came on. The product is essentially a series of templates of already made website and all you have to do is change the text and photos and off you go. I bought the disk and tried my hand and doing my website. Now, I am technologically illiterate (and thick) and just about managed to register a domain, setup an online shop and put up 5 pages. I’m naturally very obsessed with details so when I was faced with the unenviable task of making 5 web pages, it had to take me a week to come up with something that remotely resembles a website.

Needless to say, the website never seemed to take off. I wasn’t until recently that I decided to entrust all my website needs to the capable hands of Sigidi Design. It’s wasn’t cheap but I’m very pleased with the final product. I now have a website that works. All I have to worry about is do the actual work.
